KING DAVID, ARIEL

Under the vision of the SABJE, a need was determined to create a Jewish day school for children with learning disabilities.

Identifying that a part of the Victory Park Campus was available, this project was constructed in three phases in-line with the growth and development of the school, which now includes 14 classrooms, therapy and OT amenities as well as a music and art room. The building was designed to focus on the interactive playground which was populated with equipment to improve motor-function skills.

The a-symmetrical steel sheeted roof becomes the unifying concept that is continued in all the various stages of the project. By wrapping this down into cladding, the transition between horizontal and vertical surfaces are seamlessly integrated.

Each doorway to each classroom is celebrated by a portal structure and these are all painted in different colours to create identity against uniformity.

The main entrance to the building consists of a double volume foyer which is often used for school assemblies and informal meetings.

Colour was used to create accent points and features on stair risers, window screens and entrance points.

The project has successfully achieved what the client required and has become a strong attraction to these learners in the community.
